Noah and the Ark
Is your faith anchored in reverent fear of God or complacency? Learn from Noah's unwavering faith, grace, and rescue mission.
--
Noah’s faith was not passive—it was built on absolute certainty that God is who He says He is.
In a time when society ignored and rejected God, Noah walked in obedience, trusting in God's Word despite ridicule. His faith was not just belief; it was action. God called Noah to a rescue mission by grace, showing that faith involves responding to God's call with conviction and respect, not just receiving blessings.
We frequently desire a faith that offers comfort without requiring us to confront our challenges, and bestows blessings without the need for obedience. But true faith, like Noah’s, is anchored in a deep, reverent fear of God—acknowledging His power, sovereignty, and justice. Joshua MacLeod delivers a strong sermon encouraging us to assess if our faith is rooted in God's Word or just our personal views.
Listen now to be challenged, encouraged, and equipped to live out a faith that truly honors God.

- Good morning, Springhouse,
Speaker:as you're coming and bringing your dollars
Speaker:for those in need.
Speaker:We appreciate you guys being here this morning.
Speaker:Those who are joining us on live stream,
Speaker:thank you for being with us today.
Speaker:It's a good day to be in the house of the Lord.
Speaker:And I just love,
Speaker:I just love the opportunity to witness baptism.
Speaker:Do you?
Speaker:Is that true?
Speaker:When people give their life to the Lord
Speaker:and they make that public proclamation
Speaker:that they are dead to the world,
Speaker:everybody say dead to the world, alive in Christ.
Speaker:We baptize, we baptize dead to the world,
Speaker:alive in Jesus Christ.
Speaker:And I can't think of a better way to be alive
Speaker:than in Christ Jesus,
Speaker:because when you're not alive in Christ Jesus,
Speaker:you're only alive in the world,
Speaker:which means that you're actually dead in the world.
Speaker:Does that make sense?
Speaker:Yes?
Speaker:But we are alive in Christ.
Speaker:Hey guys, tonight at 5.30, everybody say 5.30.
Speaker:Look at your neighbor and say chili time.
Speaker:Tonight is a chili cook-off tonight at 5.30,
Speaker:and we want this room to be filled.
Speaker:Listen, if you call Springhouse your home,
Speaker:if Springhouse is your family,
Speaker:tonight is a very important special night,
Speaker:a special gathering.
Speaker:We're gonna eat chili together,
Speaker:and then at 6.30, we're gonna gather for a time of worship,
Speaker:and we are going to be sharing some wonderful things
Speaker:about 2025.
Speaker:We have some transitions happening.
Speaker:We have some staff members we need to recognize.
Speaker:We have some new staff, new positions,
Speaker:some things coming on the horizon.
Speaker:We want to share with you exciting things,
Speaker:because everything in the kingdom is exciting.
Speaker:What God does is exciting.
Speaker:And so we want you to be here to be a part of it,
Speaker:'cause we need that connective tissue,
Speaker:because it's not just about me or the staff or the team.
Speaker:Guys, we're a part of this together, okay?
Speaker:And so come and be a part of that gathering tonight.
Speaker:5.30, we're gonna feed you.
Speaker:Children's ministry will be open this evening.
Speaker:6.30 to eight o'clock, we're at Vision Casting.
Speaker:Make a plan to be here this evening.
Speaker:And God is always saving the very best for right now.
Speaker:Is that true?
Speaker:We are continuing the journey of looking
Speaker:at the greatest stories ever told.
Speaker:And I got the privilege of sitting through this
Speaker:during the first gathering,
Speaker:and get ready to leave with a heart change.
Speaker:Are you ready?
Speaker:Joshua McCloud's gonna come share with us.
Speaker:Welcome, Josh.
Speaker:- I love you, thank you.
Speaker:It's pretty easy to preach when you get set up like that.
Speaker:If you haven't met with God,
Speaker:I probably won't be able to help you at all.
Speaker:Jonathan and worship team does so good every single week.
Speaker:Yeah, come on.
Speaker:You know, this year we started out with some doozy messages.
Speaker:These greatest stories ever told started with Adam and Eve
Speaker:talking about the fall.
Speaker:And then Pastor Ronnie shared last week about Cain and Abel.
Speaker:And today I'm talking about Noah and a catastrophic flood
Speaker:that covered the whole world.
Speaker:So it seems like that we missed maybe the mark
Speaker:of the feel-good sermons,
Speaker:but we may be landing in the faith-good sermons.
Speaker:And I'm talking today about Noah, who is a man of faith.
Speaker:And I pray that I will be faithful in this message.
Speaker:You know, let me say just a couple of things about Noah
Speaker:even before I start.
Speaker:Noah, he had certain faith.
Speaker:A hundred percent bet your life on God kind of faith.
Speaker:Noah followed God's instructions
Speaker:like his life depended on it, and incidentally it did.
Speaker:And Noah's faith helped rescue countless people.
Speaker:So let's compare our faith this morning
Speaker:to the faith of Noah.
Speaker:If you're able to stand,
Speaker:I'd like to read this passage of Scripture.
Speaker:And let's see if we can read this passage of Scripture
Speaker:with Kevin level gusto.
Speaker:So faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
Speaker:the evidence of things not seen.
Speaker:For by it the people of old received their commendation.
Speaker:By faith we understand that the universe was created
Speaker:by the word of God so that what is seen
Speaker:was not made out of things that are visible.
Speaker:By faith Abel offered to God
Speaker:a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain,
Speaker:through which he was commended as righteous,
Speaker:God commending him by accepting his gifts.
Speaker:And then he moved the clicker.
Speaker:(audience laughing)
Speaker:I guess that's my job.
Speaker:(audience laughing)
Speaker:And through his faith, though he died,
Speaker:he still speaks.
Speaker:By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death
Speaker:and he was not found because God had taken him.
Speaker:For he was commended as having pleased God
Speaker:and without faith it is impossible to please him
Speaker:for whoever would draw near to God must believe
Speaker:that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Speaker:By faith Noah being warned by God concerning events
Speaker:as yet unseen in reverent fear constructed an ark
Speaker:for the saving of his household.
Speaker:By this he condemned the world
Speaker:and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Speaker:This is the word of the Lord.
Speaker:Thanks be to God.
Speaker:You can tell who came from some Anglican background
Speaker:or something like that when you say,
Speaker:this is the word of the Lord and you see what happens.
Speaker:You may please be seated.
Speaker:Now I'm sure that all of us have heard the story of Noah.
Speaker:God was gonna destroy the world because of wickedness,
Speaker:but he had grace upon Noah and his family and saved mankind
Speaker:and all the animal kinds in a big boat.
Speaker:So when you're looking at the story of Noah,
Speaker:I guess the first question that we should ask is,
Speaker:did this really happen?
Speaker:Was there really a Noah?
Speaker:Was there really a boat?
Speaker:Was there really a flood?
Speaker:I was looking on YouTube and I watched this debate
Speaker:between Ken Ham, who's a creation scientist
Speaker:and Bill Nye the Science Guy, who's a scientist.
Speaker:And I listened to Ken Ham's arguments and I was like,
Speaker:wow, it really happened.
Speaker:This is incredible.
Speaker:And then I listened to Bill Nye the Science Guy
Speaker:and I was like, wow, wait, maybe it didn't happen.
Speaker:What are we gonna do?
Speaker:And so, you know, there's some people out here today
Speaker:that I'm sure that you think that the story
Speaker:of Noah totally happened.
Speaker:And then there's some people out here
Speaker:that I'm sure that you think
Speaker:that it was just a biblical allegory.
Speaker:So in light of that,
Speaker:I should probably tell you right up front,
Speaker:and I may be in the minority,
Speaker:but I absolutely believe the story of Noah.
Speaker:I believe that it actually happened.
Speaker:I believe that there was a boat and an ark and a flood
Speaker:and animals on the boat,
Speaker:and that it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, I believe it.
Speaker:And so some of you might dismiss my sermon today
Speaker:because I believe in that story of Noah.
Speaker:But while I'm at it, I might as well tell you
Speaker:some other crazy things that I believe.
Speaker:See, I believe that we are living on a big circle
Speaker:that moves at a thousand miles per hour,
Speaker:but it feels flat.
Speaker:And I also believe that there's a huge exploding ball
Speaker:of fire out in the sky that keeps our world alive.
Speaker:And there are nuclear explosions happening
Speaker:in this big ball of fire continuously,
Speaker:but it never burns up.
Speaker:I also believe that if this ball of fire
Speaker:was 5% farther away, we would all freeze.
Speaker:And if it was 5% closer, we would all melt.
Speaker:So honestly, believing in a catastrophic flood
Speaker:that covered the entire world,
Speaker:when 70% of the world is water,
Speaker:and every major culture in the ancient world
Speaker:talks about a major flood,
Speaker:I don't have a problem believing the story of Noah.
Speaker:But if we're honest, I think the problem that we have
Speaker:with the story of Noah is not the flood.
Speaker:I think the problem we have with the story of Noah
Speaker:is who caused the flood.
Speaker:See, we have a problem believing anything about God
Speaker:that doesn't align with our view
Speaker:of what we think God should do.
Speaker:The story of Noah reminds us that God can do anything
Speaker:that he wants to with his world,
Speaker:and he doesn't have to ask our permission.
Speaker:If you didn't know that the world is God's sandbox,
Speaker:not yours.
Speaker:My son John says, "Dad, you gotta warn people
Speaker:"to put on some boots when you preach
Speaker:"'cause sometimes you step on toes."
Speaker:Sorry, John.
Speaker:The story of Noah is very challenging to a modern world
Speaker:because we only want a God who ever brings blessing
Speaker:and never brings judgment.
Speaker:We want a faith in God that doesn't require
Speaker:any fear of God.
Speaker:I was listening to a sermon recently by Adrian Rogers.
Speaker:Adrian Rogers was a great man of God,
Speaker:he was a great speaker.
Speaker:And he said that the mark of a society on its last legs
Speaker:is when there is no fear of God.
Speaker:He said in his sermon, many of us talk about faith,
Speaker:and we talk about God's kindness and his grace and his mercy.
Speaker:But the fear of God includes God's power,
Speaker:his holiness and his justice.
Speaker:In the passage that we read earlier,
Speaker:or maybe I read depending on whether or not
Speaker:I've advanced the slide,
Speaker:it says that Noah in reverent fear constructed an ark
Speaker:for the saving of his household.
Speaker:Adrian Rogers went on to say in that sermon
Speaker:that the fear of God is a core foundation of faith.
Speaker:Now I know that reverent fear of God is very different
Speaker:than craven fear of God.
Speaker:And God doesn't want us to live in any fear
Speaker:because he has already demonstrated on the cross
Speaker:that he loves us entirely.
Speaker:But I think sometimes in the church,
Speaker:we've been running away so far from the craven fear of God
Speaker:that we've completely left out the reverent fear of God.
Speaker:See now, a human fears something that they can't control.
Speaker:We can't control God.
Speaker:It is only right and good for us to fear God
Speaker:because he is large and in charge, and we are not.
Speaker:There's a passage from C.S. Lewis's
Speaker:The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,
Speaker:where Lucy asked a question about Aslan,
Speaker:who is a type of Christ.
Speaker:And she says, "Well, is he safe?"
Speaker:And Mr. Beaver says to Lucy, he says, "Safe?
Speaker:"Who said anything about being safe?
Speaker:"Of course he isn't safe, but he's good."
Speaker:So I wanna ask you, when you compare your faith
Speaker:to the faith of Noah,
Speaker:is your faith in God anchored in a reverent fear of God,
Speaker:or are you taking him lightly?
Speaker:Do you base your beliefs on your thoughts,
Speaker:or do you base your beliefs on his word?
Speaker:Noah was 500 years old when he started building the ark.
Speaker:Now I was working on a construction project yesterday,
Speaker:and I'm 47 years old,
Speaker:and I have like 47-year-old arthritis.
Speaker:So I woke up this morning feeling like,
Speaker:oh, can't believe that 500-year-old dude
Speaker:worked on an ark for 100 years.
Speaker:I can't even imagine what 500-year-old arthritis feels like.
Speaker:(audience laughing)
Speaker:And so Noah came 10 generations after Adam and Eve.
Speaker:So this is roughly 1,000 years after Cain killed Abel.
Speaker:And mankind had multiplied all over the earth.
Speaker:And there was some crazy stuff going on.
Speaker:There were these things called the Nephilim.
Speaker:I'm gonna tell you right now,
Speaker:I have no idea about the Nephilim.
Speaker:But apparently somebody over here does.
Speaker:You could go check there.
Speaker:Now, the reason why I don't know a lot about the Nephilim
Speaker:is the Bible doesn't say a lot about the Nephilim.
Speaker:But it does say a lot about Noah.
Speaker:So I can preach on that pretty easy.
Speaker:I do, however, know that there were complex cities
Speaker:and civilizations.
Speaker:Genesis 4 says that there were farmers and ranchers
Speaker:and artisans that were making music and craftsmen
Speaker:that worked in bronze and iron.
Speaker:But the thing is, after Cain and Abel,
Speaker:the world kept getting darker and darker and darker.
Speaker:The Scripture says that God rescued the animals,
Speaker:two of each kind, so that he could preserve life.
Speaker:That word kindness is one of my favorite words,
Speaker:just in general.
Speaker:Because the word kindness is the same
Speaker:that we get this idea of each by their kind.
Speaker:So there were two giraffes and they were the same kind.
Speaker:There were two elephants and they were the same kind.
Speaker:Let me tell you something.
Speaker:If you're in this building, you're humankind.
Speaker:There is no difference between you and somebody else.
Speaker:The idea of racism or thinking you're better
Speaker:than someone else is just craziness.
Speaker:We're the same kind.
Speaker:So when I show someone kindness, I represent to them
Speaker:that they are a beautiful person made in the image of God.
Speaker:See, in the days of Noah, there were lots of kinds,
Speaker:but there was no kindness.
Speaker:It says in Genesis 6, verse 5,
Speaker:"The Lord saw that the wickedness of man
Speaker:"was great in the earth,
Speaker:"and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart
Speaker:"was only evil continually.
Speaker:"And the Lord regretted that he made man on earth
Speaker:"and it grieved him to his heart."
Speaker:Now this is an incredible passage of Scripture.
Speaker:Did you know that you, as a human, can break God's heart?
Speaker:God is not indifferent to the man that he created.
Speaker:The actions of man can grieve the heart of God.
Speaker:There's a New Testament passage that says,
Speaker:"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God
Speaker:"by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Speaker:"Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and slimmer
Speaker:"and clamor be put away from you, along with all malice."
Speaker:God was grieved, not because he created a beautiful world,
Speaker:not because he created humankind,
Speaker:but he was grieved because man chose to reject him.
Speaker:Now we know from several passages of Scripture
Speaker:that God does not delight in wiping people out,
Speaker:even wicked people.
Speaker:In Ezekiel 33, 11, it says,
Speaker:"Say to them, 'As I live,' declares the Lord God,
Speaker:"I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked,
Speaker:"but that the wicked would turn from his way and live,
Speaker:"turn back, turn back from your evil ways,
Speaker:"for why will you die, O house of Israel?"
Speaker:1 Timothy 2, 3 through 4 says,
Speaker:"This is good, and it is pleasing
Speaker:"in the sight of God our Savior,
Speaker:"who desires all people to be saved
Speaker:"and to come to the knowledge of the truth."
Speaker:Finally, in 2 Peter 3, 9, it says,
Speaker:"The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise,
Speaker:"as some count slowness, but is patient towards you,
Speaker:"not wishing that any should perish,
Speaker:"but that all should reach repentance."
Speaker:So we know that God does not delight in wiping people out,
Speaker:but at the same time, we see in the sixth chapter
Speaker:of the Bible, in Genesis 6,
Speaker:that sometimes God will make a point,
Speaker:and he has a point where he says, "Enough,"
Speaker:and he wraps things up.
Speaker:I mean, think about this, we're still reading about Noah
Speaker:and learning about Noah and talking about this now,
Speaker:thousands and thousands of years later.
Speaker:God holds people accountable for want and sinfulness
Speaker:and sometimes he takes drastic measures
Speaker:to protect his future plans.
Speaker:In Luke 17, Jesus compares the day before the flood
Speaker:to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Speaker:And Sodom and Gomorrah, throughout the Bible,
Speaker:are cities that are described as places
Speaker:with pride and arrogance, greed and neglect for the poor,
Speaker:sexual immorality, abuse of power, and violence.
Speaker:Now, did you hear what I just said?
Speaker:Before the flood, what did society look like?
Speaker:Pride and arrogance, greed, neglect for the poor,
Speaker:sexual immorality, abuse of power, and violence.
Speaker:The Sodom and Gomorrah are all throughout the Bible,
Speaker:but those descriptions come from Ezekiel 16
Speaker:and Genesis 19 and Jude 1.
Speaker:But even in Sodom and Gomorrah,
Speaker:God wasn't quick to destroy them.
Speaker:In fact, he told Abraham that if there were 10 righteous
Speaker:people in the two cities combined,
Speaker:that he would not destroy the city.
Speaker:So can you imagine an entire world
Speaker:without 10 righteous people?
Speaker:It's pretty incredible.
Speaker:Noah and his family were eight people on the boat.
Speaker:We learn from 2 Peter 2, 5 that while Noah was building
Speaker:the ark, he was preaching.
Speaker:God was giving people the chance to repent
Speaker:by witnessing both the words and the works
Speaker:that were accomplished by Noah and his family.
Speaker:I've read through this book several times.
Speaker:I hope you've read through this book several times.
Speaker:I've never seen in this book a place where God forces people
Speaker:to repent and turn for him.
Speaker:That's another thing we don't like about God.
Speaker:See, we don't like that God allows things to play out
Speaker:and he allows people to do wicked things
Speaker:and allows wicked things to happen.
Speaker:We get this idea in our modern culture
Speaker:that if we just imagine a better future,
Speaker:that the things are gonna get better.
Speaker:Like this sentiment is encapsulated perfectly in the song,
Speaker:"Imagine" by John Lennon.
Speaker:And philosophers throughout history
Speaker:have been singing that song.
Speaker:They started things like the Renaissance
Speaker:and the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening
Speaker:and modernism and now postmodernism.
Speaker:And I'm not sure if John Lennon was a history buff or not,
Speaker:but he may have forgotten that Cain killed Abel.
Speaker:And I don't know if you're a history buff or not,
Speaker:but you may have forgotten that within 100 years,
Speaker:that within the past 100 years,
Speaker:Hitler and Stalin were killing millions of people
Speaker:on this same planet 100 years ago.
Speaker:One of the things that we forget about sin
Speaker:is that sin will always grow unless it's stopped.
Speaker:There is no harmless sin.
Speaker:Even a white lie leads to darkness and death.
Speaker:We don't take sin seriously.
Speaker:Sin is real.
Speaker:It's not a philosophy.
Speaker:It's a deadly growing cancer.
Speaker:I've seen firsthand the effects of sin
Speaker:in places like Darfur, Sudan, and in the Kibera slums,
Speaker:and in the Khaelishe slums,
Speaker:and in Haiti after an earthquake.
Speaker:And we wanna ask God, "Where are you?"
Speaker:Now, I can't give you the answers for God
Speaker:because I'm not God.
Speaker:But I do know something about this word.
Speaker:There's not a place in this word
Speaker:where the devastation and sin and horror
Speaker:of the atrocities and the earthquakes and the sickness
Speaker:and all of the things in this world,
Speaker:they're all in this book.
Speaker:So God didn't just replace all those things.
Speaker:You know what he did?
Speaker:He joined in.
Speaker:Jesus came and joined the suffering.
Speaker:I can't tell you that I understand everything that God does
Speaker:because God is eternal and I am temporary.
Speaker:Or maybe God says I'm eternal.
Speaker:In Him.
Speaker:I know that God allows what He hates
Speaker:to accomplish what He loves.
Speaker:From the creation of the world,
Speaker:God had a plan for the redeemer
Speaker:of this broken, sin-sick, horrible world.
Speaker:We learned last week that in Revelation it says,
Speaker:"The Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the earth."
Speaker:God always had a plan to send a redeemer.
Speaker:But in the days of Noah, it was the worst case scenario
Speaker:because there wasn't even anyone left to redeem but God.
Speaker:Genesis 6-8 says,
Speaker:"But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord."
Speaker:Now I know we've all had hard times and challenges
Speaker:and sin and problems.
Speaker:Noah's hard time was that the entire world
Speaker:was going bonkers and everyone only thought
Speaker:of evil continually.
Speaker:But it doesn't matter how dark this world gets,
Speaker:there is hope and God's favor is available
Speaker:for people who turn to God.
Speaker:I'm fascinated with this word favor.
Speaker:I love in the Bible, you can look up like the first time
Speaker:that a word is used in the Bible.
Speaker:The first time the word Spirit of God is used in the Bible
Speaker:is with Bezalel, a construction superintendent
Speaker:who built the tabernacle for God.
Speaker:And it says Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God
Speaker:and wisdom and understanding and knowledge
Speaker:and craftsmanship.
Speaker:And we should pay attention to that.
Speaker:Like the first time the word filled with the Spirit,
Speaker:it didn't just come like this, it wasn't just a feeling
Speaker:but it was a creative power, excellence, wisdom,
Speaker:understanding, knowledge.
Speaker:The first time that Noah is mentioned
Speaker:or the first time that favor is mentioned is with Noah.
Speaker:The word favor means grace.
Speaker:And the word grace means to bend and stoop in kindness
Speaker:and deal mercifully.
Speaker:If God didn't have grace on Noah,
Speaker:then none of us would be here today.
Speaker:God knew that there were going to be more people than Noah
Speaker:that would want to get in the ark
Speaker:and remember their creator.
Speaker:The gospel message is a message of grace.
Speaker:I've had the luxury of traveling in more than 30 countries
Speaker:and I have deep dive studied in other religions
Speaker:because I wanted to know if they were true.
Speaker:But maybe they're true.
Speaker:How do I know?
Speaker:I want to test this.
Speaker:And I saw this common theme in every religion.
Speaker:And some people put this same theme on Christianity,
Speaker:but it's not in Christianity.
Speaker:And the theme is this, to get to God, you need to do X
Speaker:and then they fill in X.
Speaker:You might need to give more, you might need to give less.
Speaker:You know, in Islam, you've got these five pillars.
Speaker:You got to do this and this and this and this.
Speaker:In Hinduism, you got to withdraw from this and this and this.
Speaker:In modernism, you need to, whatever you do,
Speaker:you need to believe in nothing.
Speaker:But in Christianity, God said,
Speaker:"There's a chasm between us because of separation
Speaker:and there's nothing you can do."
Speaker:Sit in that for a second.
Speaker:There is a chasm, there is sin and death and brokenness,
Speaker:and there is nothing you can do.
Speaker:And so Jesus invented grace.
Speaker:Grace is when he comes down and lifts you out of a flood
Speaker:or a fire or a terrible circumstance,
Speaker:and he gives you eternity with him because of his grace.
Speaker:Genesis 6 with the Noah story
Speaker:is the first message of grace in the Bible.
Speaker:Now here's something interesting about Noah.
Speaker:How did Noah respond to grace?
Speaker:It's curious to me that Noah responded,
Speaker:he had reverent fear for God,
Speaker:and then he received grace, and so he went to work.
Speaker:So God gave Noah grace, and then he gave him work.
Speaker:Now the moment that I talk about work in a church,
Speaker:we're in trouble because, no, it's not work,
Speaker:there's no works-based salvation
Speaker:and there's grace-based salvation.
Speaker:There's a fantastic passage that talks about this subject.
Speaker:Ephesians 2, eight and nine.
Speaker:"For by grace you have been saved through faith,
Speaker:"and it is not your own doing, it is the gift of God,
Speaker:"not as a result of works, so that no one may boast."
Speaker:Okay, if you have not read that verse,
Speaker:it just validates what I said about Christianity.
Speaker:You can do it, it's not about you.
Speaker:It's about what Jesus did.
Speaker:You can either accept it or reject it, but you can't do it.
Speaker:But have you ever read the next verse?
Speaker:The very next verse says,
Speaker:"For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus
Speaker:"for good works, which God prepared beforehand
Speaker:"that we should walk in them."
Speaker:A lot of us are focused on the grace of God,
Speaker:but we're not focused on any work, right?
Speaker:Noah had a family that needed saved.
Speaker:When God gave Noah grace, he also gave him an assignment.
Speaker:I don't wanna get sidetracked,
Speaker:this is a whole sermon on itself,
Speaker:but if you have grace, you have work to do.
Speaker:It doesn't mean, the grace of God does not mean
Speaker:that you are allowed to sit on your hands
Speaker:and watch a lost and broken world get lost and die.
Speaker:If you have received the grace of God,
Speaker:you are assigned to a rescue mission.
Speaker:With no fear of God in our modern culture,
Speaker:we don't feel the need to rescue anyone.
Speaker:Nobody wants to build a boat
Speaker:because nobody believes that there will be a flood.
Speaker:If we're honest, we are more concerned
Speaker:with retirement than rescue.
Speaker:We are more about prosperity than people.
Speaker:We care more about a bonus
Speaker:than we care about building a boat.
Speaker:How many of us spent the majority of last week
Speaker:on a rescue mission?
Speaker:How many of us are building a boat for our families
Speaker:and our coworkers and our communities
Speaker:and our neighbor?
Speaker:How many of us believe in kindness?
Speaker:Or are we stuck in pride and power and sexual immorality?
Speaker:Noah feared God.
Speaker:Noah got to work.
Speaker:The boat could have fit a lot more people.
Speaker:The Bible says that the ark was bigger than a stadium.
Speaker:It was bigger than a football field.
Speaker:You can fit a lot of people in there.
Speaker:I've been to the Titans game.
Speaker:It was a stadium high.
Speaker:There were three decks.
Speaker:There were animals.
Speaker:There was food.
Speaker:And God miraculously called animals.
Speaker:And there are so many symbols in the book of Noah.
Speaker:I could talk about so many different things.
Speaker:Why did Noah have to wait in the boat seven days
Speaker:before it started to rain?
Speaker:Why did it rain for 40 days and 40 nights?
Speaker:Why was there only one door in the ark?
Speaker:Why did God himself shut the door?
Speaker:Why did Noah send out a raven and then he sent out a dove?
Speaker:Why did the dove go out three times
Speaker:and why did the dove come back with an olive branch?
Speaker:There's so much story.
Speaker:There's so much symbolism in the story of Noah.
Speaker:I could be here all day.
Speaker:But God told me to talk about faith.
Speaker:If you have faith in God, you have a reverend fear of God.
Speaker:If you have faith in God, you are a rescuer automatically.
Speaker:But here's the deal.
Speaker:Satan is a master of attacking your faith.
Speaker:You try putting a message like this together,
Speaker:he's attacking my faith.
Speaker:You try reading the word of God
Speaker:and sharing with your coworker,
Speaker:he's going to be attacking your faith.
Speaker:And here are three questions that are faith builders
Speaker:because they are faith challengers.
Speaker:Now Satan is allowed to tempt,
Speaker:but he's not allowed to win if you put your faith in God.
Speaker:Satan tempted Eve.
Speaker:Did God really say?
Speaker:Did God really say?
Speaker:And now we read this, we're modernists,
Speaker:we read this Bible and we said, "Did God really do that?
Speaker:Did God really do that?"
Speaker:I mean, come on.
Speaker:Like they didn't even have the internet.
Speaker:Did God, will God really do that again?
Speaker:It sound familiar?
Speaker:In the chapter, in the script for passage we read,
Speaker:it says, "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for,
Speaker:the conviction of things not seen."
Speaker:I wanna say something about faith.
Speaker:Faith means conviction.
Speaker:Conviction means you actually believe it.
Speaker:It's evidence, it's proof.
Speaker:Verse six says, "And without faith,
Speaker:it is impossible to please Him,
Speaker:for whoever would draw near to Him,
Speaker:whoever would draw near to God,
Speaker:must believe that He exists
Speaker:and that He rewards those who seek Him."
Speaker:When the Bible talks about faith,
Speaker:it's talking about a thing in which there is no doubting.
Speaker:Faith is the point at which your doubts are removed
Speaker:and you trust in God that He says who He says He is,
Speaker:that He is who He says He is.
Speaker:You know, even in James it says,
Speaker:"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God
Speaker:who gives to all men liberally without reproach,
Speaker:and it will be given to him."
Speaker:But then it says, "But let him ask in faith,"
Speaker:and then what do the next words say?
Speaker:"With no doubting."
Speaker:See, it defines what faith is.
Speaker:Now I can have a belief
Speaker:that maybe the chiefs will win the Super Bowl.
Speaker:But I can't tell you I have faith in that.
Speaker:I'm not gonna bet my life on that.
Speaker:But when you're dealing with God,
Speaker:you don't want belief, you want faith.
Speaker:You want faith that is the kind of faith
Speaker:that puts you in action.
Speaker:Faith does not deal in feelings or philosophy.
Speaker:Faith deals in certainty.
Speaker:Now it is so counter-cultural
Speaker:to believe in anything with certainty these days.
Speaker:Probably most of you are like, "We don't like you, Josh.
Speaker:What are you talking about?
Speaker:You can't be certain about anything.
Speaker:Didn't you wake up today in a modern society?"
Speaker:You go into your job, or you go into university,
Speaker:and you talk about absolute truth and see what happens.
Speaker:The only truth believed in society with the philosophers
Speaker:and the teachers of our day
Speaker:is that there is no absolute truth.
Speaker:Now I'm gonna give you a little hack, okay?
Speaker:This is important, pay attention.
Speaker:If you ever get in a conversation with somebody that says,
Speaker:"There is absolutely no truth.
Speaker:You can't say that there's absolute truth."
Speaker:Ask them, "Are you absolutely sure about that?"
Speaker:See, the argument kind of breaks down pretty quick.
Speaker:Satan challenged Eve's faith in the garden,
Speaker:and he challenges our faith today.
Speaker:Did God actually say?
Speaker:Pastor Ronnie shared some questions
Speaker:where he was challenged in the scripture
Speaker:about the goodness of God and His Word.
Speaker:And he had a faith struggle.
Speaker:And he said in his faith struggle,
Speaker:he walked away from God for five years
Speaker:because he read something in the Word of God,
Speaker:and he couldn't figure it out.
Speaker:I have also had many a faith struggle.
Speaker:Let me tell you some of the stuff
Speaker:that gave me a faith struggle.
Speaker:Is sin really that bad?
Speaker:Like really eternal?
Speaker:Like you're gonna send people to hell because of sin?
Speaker:Really?
Speaker:Is there really heaven and hell?
Speaker:Did God really wipe out the world with a great flood?
Speaker:Did God really completely obliterate the Canaanites?
Speaker:Does God, does really following other gods than Jesus
Speaker:really keep people from heaven?
Speaker:Do continual habits of immorality, pride, anger, and greed
Speaker:really keep people from heaven?
Speaker:See, I wrestle with these things.
Speaker:I don't know if anybody else out there
Speaker:ever asked the question of God,
Speaker:and they're like, "I don't like this,
Speaker:and I'm reading something,
Speaker:and you tell me that this book defines me,
Speaker:but I wanna put you on my own terms."
Speaker:At our church, we read through the Bible in a year.
Speaker:One of the best ways to challenge your faith
Speaker:is to read the Bible.
Speaker:I often put a little note in my Bible studies that say,
Speaker:"What the heck?"
Speaker:If you've never had a what the heck moment with God,
Speaker:either you don't take God seriously,
Speaker:or His Word seriously, or yourself seriously.
Speaker:It's not like you're not gonna be able to read the Bible
Speaker:it's not okay to not wrestle with God in this day and age.
Speaker:And it is critically important to teach your children
Speaker:that wrestling with God is okay.
Speaker:I mean, they're gonna go out,
Speaker:and they're going to be made fun of
Speaker:for anything that looks like faith.
Speaker:Okay, Noah was mocked his whole life.
Speaker:But here's the thing,
Speaker:I don't think you're ever gonna have a satisfactory answer
Speaker:to the challenge of your faith until you meet with Jesus.
Speaker:I can't logic my way into meeting with God,
Speaker:but when I meet with God,
Speaker:I don't have any problems anymore.
Speaker:When I start conversations now with questions like these,
Speaker:I always start them with,
Speaker:"Jesus, I'm gonna look at the cross first.
Speaker:"I see this pain, I see this horror, I see this thing,
Speaker:"but I know that you love the world enough
Speaker:"to die on a cross for my sin
Speaker:"and the sin of everybody in this world.
Speaker:"I'm having a hard time with this passage, Jesus.
Speaker:"What the heck?"
Speaker:Sometimes God lets me sit for a while, okay?
Speaker:Sometimes he's not gonna answer me for like a year.
Speaker:But I can tell you that I have never had a question
Speaker:about God that God hasn't met with me about.
Speaker:Where did Noah get his faith with God?
Speaker:Where did this come from?
Speaker:This is one of my favorite verses about Noah.
Speaker:"Noah walked with God."
Speaker:You know how Noah built his faith
Speaker:and overcame the attacks of the enemy?
Speaker:He walks with God.
Speaker:God will take you seriously if you take God seriously,
Speaker:and he will not take you seriously
Speaker:if you do not take him seriously.
Speaker:If you aren't sure about God, start walking with God.
Speaker:I think if Noah was alive in our day,
Speaker:he would look around at our culture,
Speaker:he would say, "What the heck?
Speaker:"God, do I need to start building another boat?"
Speaker:And I think God would say, "I already built one,
Speaker:"and it's called the church."
Speaker:If you came in here today, you may not know it,
Speaker:but you stepped into an ark.
Speaker:You may not know it, but everybody sitting around you
Speaker:that has faith is a rescuer,
Speaker:and they care deeply about your soul,
Speaker:and they want you to spend eternity with them in heaven.
Speaker:Every person in this room is on a Jesus rescue mission.
Speaker:Sin wants to destroy you,
Speaker:just like it wanted to destroy Eve and Adam.
Speaker:Sin wanted to destroy Cain,
Speaker:and God wants you to be rescued by his grace.
Speaker:Noah stood out like a sore thumb.
Speaker:He was mocked by everyone.
Speaker:And if you're gonna walk in faith,
Speaker:you better not be seeking popularity.
Speaker:It's not gonna happen, but you can build a boat
Speaker:where your friends and your family in this world
Speaker:will find Jesus.
Speaker:But if you care more about retirement and relationship,
Speaker:and you care more about profit than people,
Speaker:then the lost and dying world will stay exactly like it is.
Speaker:Jesus said, he was teaching, and he talked about a lady
Speaker:that was a widow that came before God,
Speaker:and she was just wearing them out,
Speaker:like, "Give me justice, give me justice, give me justice."
Speaker:And Jesus said, "I'll answer a person like that."
Speaker:But then he said, "Nevertheless, when I return,
Speaker:"will I find faith on the earth?"
Speaker:I pray that Springhouse Church
Speaker:is not a church that cares more about retirement
Speaker:than relationship.
Speaker:We are on a rescue mission, people.
Speaker:And listen, if you're lost, get on the boat.
Speaker:His name is Jesus.
Speaker:This church is about building up this place for Jesus.
Speaker:Now, if you walk with God like Noah,
Speaker:you get some very specific instructions.
Speaker:When you read the account of Noah,
Speaker:he told him exactly how to build a boat, right?
Speaker:Noah didn't go off on a wing like, "You know what?
Speaker:"I think I'm gonna put this timber over here."
Speaker:And this was not artistic enough,
Speaker:so I'm gonna put a little flourish right here.
Speaker:No, Noah's like, "Wait, so let's get this straight, God.
Speaker:"So you're going to wipe out the entire world,
Speaker:"and these are the instructions for this ark.
Speaker:"Yeah, I'm gonna do exactly what's in this book."
Speaker:You know?
Speaker:Noah followed the instructions.
Speaker:Have you ever read the book?
Speaker:Do you know the instructions?
Speaker:Are you basing your life and your history
Speaker:on somebody else's interpretation of the instructions?
Speaker:Look, I mean, look,
Speaker:I put some stuff together with instructions,
Speaker:and I do not wanna rely on somebody else telling me
Speaker:what the instructions say.
Speaker:That will be crazy.
Speaker:Noah feared God, he reverently walked with God,
Speaker:and he obeyed God's Word like his life depended on it.
Speaker:Perhaps the most destructive movement in Christianity today
Speaker:is this tendency to think that personal Bible study
Speaker:is somewhat optional.
Speaker:Take yourself seriously, please.
Speaker:Noah knew that building the ark according to God's plan
Speaker:was critical for being able to rescue his family.
Speaker:Do we think that we're gonna be able to rescue our family
Speaker:and ignore the instructions?
Speaker:Some of us are just watching TV.
Speaker:You know, that's where all my happiness is gonna be found.
Speaker:The Word of God says that in the presence of God
Speaker:is the fullness of joy.
Speaker:Our worship team, I don't know where you are,
Speaker:but you better come get me off this stage.
Speaker:(congregation cheering)
Speaker:Did God really say?
Speaker:Did God really do?
Speaker:Will God really do this again?
Speaker:Where is your faith?
Speaker:How does your faith compare to Noah's faith?
Speaker:I'll tell you why I believe in the story of Noah,
Speaker:because Jesus did.
Speaker:I'll tell you why I believe in heaven and hell,
Speaker:because Jesus preached about it.
Speaker:I'll tell you why I believe in salvation based on grace,
Speaker:because I'm a vile sinner.
Speaker:And God have mercy on my soul.
Speaker:I'll tell you why the church of God
Speaker:is full of everyone who believes the same thing.
Speaker:You don't have judgment in the house of the Lord.
Speaker:You have a bunch of people like that.
Speaker:I'm glad I'm on a boat,
Speaker:and I want everybody else on the boat.
Speaker:The Bible says that if you are in Christ,
Speaker:that you have salvation.
Speaker:If Christ is in you, you will live in eternity with God.
Speaker:If you were on the boat, you were rescued.
Speaker:And if you're in Christ, you will be rescued.
Speaker:(gentle music)
Speaker:It only takes grace.
Speaker:You don't have to do anything but repent.
Speaker:Say, God, I need you.
Speaker:We're going to open this altar space.
Speaker:And if you've never wrestled with God,
Speaker:I want you to come down and wrestle with God and pray,
Speaker:and repent and ask God to give you faith.
Speaker:Some of us like me, we wrestle with God every day,
Speaker:and God's like, "Quit wrestling and start resting."
Speaker:You might need to come down and rest in God.
Speaker:If you're living life without a church family,
Speaker:and you don't have a boat that you're building,
Speaker:this is your church family.
Speaker:You're here for a reason.
Speaker:Come and get in the boat.
Speaker:We need another hammer.
Speaker:If your life has not been a rescue mission,
Speaker:and you have cared more about your prosperity than people,
Speaker:surrender, Elvin.
Speaker:Come down here and surrender to follow Christ,
Speaker:and to use every bit of your heart, mind, soul, and strength
Speaker:for the worship of God and the rescue of man.
Speaker:If you need healing or deliverance, freedom,
Speaker:come down here and receive me.
Speaker:If I could get the prayer team
Speaker:and the worshipers to come down, meet with God today.
Speaker:We live in a world that it's getting darker and darker
Speaker:and darker, and Jesus only has perfect light.
Speaker:If you have never experienced light,
Speaker:you can experience it at the cross.
Speaker:Don't leave today without getting on the boat.
Speaker:In Jesus' name, amen.
